Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time but after my move last June I felt like it was even more important than ever. In DC, I was dressing for business formal meetings, business casual for most work days, dressing for style events, holiday parties, ball games, nights out… you get the idea. My wardrobe was a mess and my closet was filled to the brim with pieces that had tags on them years after I’d purchased them. And with all those clothes, I still found myself reaching for the same pieces, mixing and matching to make an appropriate outfit for the occasion.

Now, with my days looking a little different, I’m still reaching for the same pieces. Shocker. My style hasn’t changed – it’s just become more refined and after years of doing this little dance it was time to consolidate.

A capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe made up of much fewer (staple) pieces that you can mix and match to create a number of different looks. Think a black blazer is just a piece left for more formal occasions? Think again.

Capsule Wardrobe | Black Blazer

Business Formal | Pair with an LBD

Business Casual | pair with a camel skirt, rust sweater, flat ankle boots

Fall Casual | pair with black cigarette pants, white tee, print flats

Summer Casual | pair with light wash denim cut offs, white tee

The possibilities are endless – and it’s easier than you think.

Ultimately, I decided on the capsule wardrobe option because I wasn’t wearing over 50% of the clothes in my closet. These pieces weren’t living their best life and I wasn’t being financially responsible. I sold and donated most of my closet before and right after my move, then invested in those staple pieces my new wardrobe would revolve around: a versatile white blouse, neutral colored silk camisoles, a great pair of denim, leopard print flats, etc. My updated capsule wardrobe has made it so much easier to stay true to my style since it’s made up exclusively of pieces I love. If you’re like me and you find yourself reaching for most of the same pieces in your closet or you’re done being overwhelmed with options, then pairing down and creating a capsule wardrobe might be the option for you!

I’ve put together a cheat sheet with all the basics you need for a capsule wardrobe.

black denim | dark wash denim | light wash denim | black cigarette pants
